Inspired by the wonderful works of David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs and Armistead Maupin, a new Los Angeles author, who didn't start writing until his late forties, has come out with a collection of eight memoirs/essays and one short poem on a wide variety of topics. The title story humorously recounts surviving his first year in Los Angeles when as a young dancer he made questionable choices while living a Bohemian lifestyle with as many as eight other people in a one bedroom apartment, in an apartment complex filled with drag queens, male hustlers, drug dealers, junkies and other marginal characters. Other topics include his accounts of dancing in Michael Jackson's Beat It music video, teaching Pilates to Joan Collins and other celebrities in the mid-1980's, and working as a physical therapist for over twenty years at a county hospital in a large, urban setting. The final memoir,Death in Ft. Lauderdale, uniquely told through a series of personal messages on Facebook, tells what happened on an ill-fated and tragic trip in 1974 when as a junior in high school he went to Florida on spring break with three of his best friends. Several of these stories were previously published as individual memoirs/essays.

I was intrigued by "death in ft. Lauderdale". The account of a friends death that obviously was very personal to the author was captivating.Relating to the tragic loss of a friend, I identified with the author. I appreciated the frank manner of describing the events of the tragedy.Very gritty.

Stories From Vaseline Alley and other true tales eBook John Quentin Wilde Reviews

Want some inside scoops on Michael Jackson, Joan Collins or Don Henley? This book has some enjoyable and entertaining anecdotes about each of them. The story of the writer's unique grandmother is really good. What a character! Want to find out what a sixhead or a fart in a skillet are? You'll find out and be amused.
Laughed out loud so many times. Funny stuff!
I just want to note that though his stories are interesting, in one encounter with MJ on his Beat It video he notes that MJ's skin was red and raw looking, and attributes it to a chemical peel - MJ was actually suffering a flare up of his discoid lupus, and what he saw is known as the Malar or butterfly rash. It wasn't make up or a chemical peel, it was a medical condition he was trying to control. A medical report from the January 1984 Pepsi burn has leaked recently stating this too.
Stories From Vaseline Alley and other true tales, by John Quentin Wilde, is a hilarious romp through the daily adventures of what turns out to be an extremely perceptive and talented young writer's life. At the time of writing, the author worked as a dancer in various Hollywood productions, including one of the first music videos featuring Michael Jackson. Instead of the usual eye witness account of celebrity appearances, this writer takes a calm, reasoned approach with a wicked sense of humor to what turns out to be poignant but heartening stories set against the decade of the 1980's. A fast read, entertaining but not too heavy. I recommended it!
great stories although connected only by being from him. found him via a search for maupin. recommend leleaux. hope am spelling right. tx observer writer. recommend to him and his readers. needs an editor. as i have observed from other self published writers.
Amusing and frank...reminded me of the fun and crazy things you do when you're young. Author has a no frills, straight-toward approach to storytelling that suits the material.
I thoroughly enjoyed this e-book, written by an up-and-coming LA author. The stories are reminiscent of my own family. Bravo!
